Year 6 Transition

Welcome Year 6,                                                                                    Bassan

I hope you and your families are all well. In this TRANSITION section of the website you will find lots of activities to help prepare you for secondary school.

Firstly, in this section of the website you can find a short welcome video message called ‘Head Teacher Welcome’, from Mr Dixon and an explanation from me of what you will find on this website and when it will be accessible.

Next you will find an introduction to all your subjects in the Year 6 Transition Curriculum Booklet. This booklet includes some fun, introductory tasks which give you a taster of the subjects you will be studying once you join us. You do not have to complete all of the activities but you may choose to do so and any that you do have a go at can be brought into school in September.

You may also like to work through the powerpoint called ‘Transition to Secondary School –PSHE’ with your parent/carer. This may help you to work through some of the worries you may have about the transition process. In addition to this there are also another set of activities (powerpoints with work booklet and accompanying videos) called, ‘Be Awesome, Go Big’ from the Hachette schools Group. You can access these straight from their website by clicking here

There are lots of really useful activities in here that will help you prepare for the transition to secondary school.

Please note in the next section of the website (Year 6 Induction – available from 22.6.20) you will find lots of activities which help you to learn a bit more about the school and help us to find out a little bit more about you, in preparation for your arrival in the autumn term.

We hope you find these activities useful in preparing you for the transition to secondary school and look forward to seeing you in September if not before.

Yours sincerely,

Indy Bassan

A SUMMER READING STORY - The Adventures of Willow, Anna, Emma and Sophia

The Personal Learning Centre at Dormston, fondly known as the PLC, is a marvellous place, and many Dormston pupils love going there. And when the weather outside is not very nice..it is quite the most popular place to be. But have you ever heard that the PLC has a magic book...? And if you have entered another world by a magic door, how are you going to get back?

A Dormston Staff member has used Lockdown as the excuse she needed to follow a long-held dream: to write a children's story. The story was inspired by, and written for, four Year 8/9 pupils in particular.
In order to make the story accessible to a range of reading abilities, the words are suitable for a reading age of 7+ years, but the content aimed at ages 10-13.

Writing competition
If you were to find the magic book with the silver cover....where would your adventure take you? Would you meet Pat, or someone else? What would you have to do in order to get back again? Learn a new skill? Overcome a fear? Find a solution to a problem? Or discover something you are good at..?
Just two short chapters are needed. You will need a chapter 6, explaining where you go and what you have to do, and then a chapter 7 to explain how you do your task to get back. Number of words is not important. If you are unsure of your spelling, have a go anyway - we can help you sort that!
The winning entries will be added into a new version of the original story, spiral bound and presented to you.
